This photograph was taken during a recent visit to the Ladakh region in India. During winters, with very cold temperatures in the minus twenties, a thick layer of ice forms on the surface of the river Zanskar. This sheet of ice, popularly known as the 'chadar', is used by the local Zanskaris for their commute to and from Leh, the capital of Ladakh. It is by walking on this ice for about five days from a place called Chilling that one can reach the monastery shown in the picture. During summers, this place can be reached by about four days of walk through the mountains either from Padum or Lamayuru.
Lingshed Monastery or Lingshed Gompa is a Gelugpa Buddhist monastery. It is located near Lingshed village in the Leh district. It was founded in the 1440s by Changsems Sherabs Zangpo, disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, on a monastic site previously founded by the Translator Rinchen Zangpo.
