Indian Peafowl (male) in the wild in the forests of Kanha National Park and Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India. The bird is celebrated in Indian and Greek mythology and is the national bird of India. Indian peafowl are widely distributed in the wild across South Asia and protected both culturally in many areas and by law in India. The peacock, known as mayura in Sanskrit, has enjoyed a fabled place in India and is frequently depicted in temple art, mythology, poetry, folk music and traditions.
